I grew up on Disney channel and I loved every single Disney Channel Original Movie or DCOM. With the invention of Disney+ I have been able to go back and rewatch some of these DCOM’s, and they are a lot weirder than I remember.
5. Lemonade Mouth
I love Lemonade Mouth, but watching it back it is definitely weirder than I remember. The plot of the movie is basically five students who are not friends go to detention in a boiler room and theres a super old lemonade vending machine they all decide to get lemonade from. They then all have the drink inn detention and they end up playing music together for some reason and the detention teacher forces them to enter a battle of the bands. The whole plot is just wild. I love this movie but it is for sure on the weirder side of the DCOM’s.
4. Luck of the Irish
This movie is insane. A boy loses his pot-of-gold good luck charm and then finds out he is part leprechaun. He starts to turn into a leprechaun and has to fight that way his whole family doesn’t get controlled by an evil leprechaun. It is way weirder than I remember...
3. The Thirteenth Year
I loved this movie as a child, but rewatching it the movie is for sure super weird. It’s all about this boy who starts growing fins and gills and then talking to some fish, this all happens because of his thirteenth birthday. The CGI and makeup looks so bad now but when I was younger I convinced I was going to turn into a mermaid on my thirteenth birthday as well.
2. Smart House
Smart House terrified me as a kid. Basically a kid doesn’t want his dad to date so he enters a contest to win a Smart House with a lady AI named PAT which he thinks will act like a mother for him and his family so his dad doesn’t have to date. PAT goes crazy towards the end of the video and turns into a 1950’s housewife and locks the whole family in the house and makes like a tornado. The whole movie is so wild.
1. Pixel Perfect
I loved watching Pixel perfect when I was younger. My cousins and I were so jealous of the main girl in it, her clothes, and that she could just download them through the internet. Rewatching this movie I realized how weird it was.
The movie starts with two friends and one is trying out to play at a club with her band. The club owner says no to her band because she's the lead singer and can not dance. Her best friend feels bad about this so he makes a holographic girl to sing and dance for her band. They try out for the club again and get accepted and then a guy from a record label loves them. Everyone is so excited about having a holographic singer. Eventually the hologram gets annoyed that she can’t feel emotions or go outside so she runs away to the internet. Since she is gone the girl who could not dance decides to dress up as her and dance and ends up falling off the 3 ft stage and everyone backs up instead of trying to catch her and she somehow gets a traumatic brain injury and goes into a coma. Everyone is freaking out and the holograph emails herself to the guy who made her and then jumps inside of the brain monitor into her head. She ends up taking over the girls body, and telling the parents there was only room for one of them in there. The parents do not freak out they just act confused. The hologram girl goes outside and spins in the rain and then gets translated into the clouds, when she leaves the girls body her body goes limp onto the ground again. It ends happily after that, but the whole movie is just so insane.
These DCOM's were a lot weirder than I remembered, but I think they are all worth a watch still. Even if they're not "good" movies they are still nostalgic and fun to watch/make fun of.
